Comparing guttering and spouting materials

You may be building your dream home or renovating your current property; the question around guttering and spouting will inevitably arise. You may have seen or heard about steel, PVC or even copper or aluminium guttering and wish to determine which is the right option for you. With over 40 years of practical industry experience, at Roofline we know guttering and spouting. As they are the most commonly asked about materials, in this blog we will do a comparison of steel vs PVC spouting and guttering materials.

PVC Guttering and Spouting

PVC guttering is often seen as the cheapest option for customers , but this is usually if they only consider the initial cost of purchasing the product.

PVC guttering is lightweight therefore the home DIYers are attracted to the possibility of installing it themselves with minimal fuss.

PVC guttering doesn’t require painting, which can be seen as a positive.

Want to change your roof and guttering colour scheme? PVC guttering and spouting usually comes in a limited range of colours and it is not always easy to paint, as paint doesn’t adhere well to the PVC surface.

Compared to other materials, PVC guttering has a short lifespan.

PVC spouting and guttering is susceptible to extreme temperatures, this means that it can become brittle in sub-zero temperature and warp or sag in high temperatures. Not great with our New Zealand climate of extremes!

PVC guttering is not great at self supporting, this means that PVC gutters are unsuitable for areas that frequently experience heavy rainfall.

All of these factors contribute to PVC gutterings’ shorter lifespan and mean that long term, it is not always the most cost effective option.

Steel Guttering and Spouting

Steel guttering and spouting is durable and has a long lifespan – you can expect steel guttering to stand the test of time and enhance the visual appeal of your home for years

Steel guttering and spouting can come in a range of colours to match your roof, and can be repainted in the future should you wish to update your colour scheme

Steel guttering is far more resistant to damage caused by extreme temperatures – steel will not become brittle when exposed to extreme cold temperatures and won’t warp in the extreme heat.

Due to its durability, steel can withstand heavy weight loads meaning it can rain all day and night and you won’t have to worry about failures

The initial cost of steel guttering and spouting is higher than that of PVC
