Why is roof colour important?

We all know that it is crucial that your roof has a strong, well designed physical structure; because the roof of a building is what protects everything inside.

The colour you choose for your roof is also very important, albeit for different reasons. Your roof makes up 30% of your street frontage – with 60% being the walls/cladding and 10% being the rainwater/guttering system). The type and colour of roof you choose will most certainly influence the look and feel of your home and it even impacts on the overall value of your property.

So, you’ll want to make sure that you carefully consider a number of factors before you make your final decision when choosing a colour for your roof.

How do I choose a colour for my roof?

Given that it’s such an important decision, Roofline have compiled a handy list of things to consider when you are choosing a colour for your roof:

  1. What do you like and/or dislike about your existing roof colour? If you are repainting/replacing your roof, think about the reasons why you’re changing your roof colour. Has your existing colour stood the test of time? Does it go well with your cladding colour?
  2. What colour roofing do other houses in your neighbourhood have? Do you like the colour of your neighbours’ roofs? Think about whether you would prefer to fit in with your direct neighbours’ colours, or stand out.
  3. Ask suppliers for samples of roof colours. The colours in brochures are not necessarily true representations of the colours when they are in place on your roof. Taking samples and holding them up against your cladding in different lights/areas can be a really useful way to see if the roof will tie in with the rest of your house. 4. View roof colours in real life settings. Colours can look different depending on the style of roof. Walk around your local area and if you see any roofs in colours that you like, take a picture so you can compare them when you’re back home and see if the colour would work with your style of roof.
  5. Think about your fascias, guttering and downpipes. If you are keeping your existing guttering (for example if you are just repainting your roof and your guttering cannot be repainted), make sure the colour of roof you pick works in with them. If you are updating your guttering and downpipes, you will most likely want to match the colour of your roof. Roofline supply and install a range of fascia, guttering & downpipes that can either compliment or contrast your roof colour.
  6. Building a new house? Consider choosing the roof colour first. There are many more colours to choose from when painting exterior plaster, therefore it’s easier to match the cladding to the roof than vica-versa. If you are using brick cladding, identify the main colours in the brick and use these to select a roofing colour. Once you have a few options, hold a roofing colour sample against a brick to work out which match best.
